Kitzbühel - The place where legends are born

125 years of ski sport in Kitzbühel. No other ski resort in the Alps can look back on such a long and successful tradition of skiing.

An inseparable part of this history and tradition is Franz Reisch: He successfully completed the first ever high-Alpine descent on skis in Austria from the Kitzbüheler Horn mountain on 15 March 1893. Reisch is thus one of the most important skiing pioneers in the Alpine region.

Additional major Kitzbühel milestones for the tradition of skiing include the construction of the Hahnenkammbahn as the first ropeway for sport in Austria and the ascendancy of ski instruction in Kitzbühel under the leadership of Karl Koller.

The life of Toni Sailer, known as the “black bolt from Kitz” is another highpoint in the city’s skiing history. Born in 1935, Toni Sailer’s skiing successes and charisma transformed him into the first global media star in winter sports. He and the Kitzbühel Wunderteam dominated the world of skiing for ten years.

Kitzbühel has dedicated an entire park to its ski legends. Exhibits here include a special memorial to Toni Sailer, Austria’s “Athlete of the Century”.
